Introduction: Blues as Operating System
The supernatural is not decoration in the blues. It is the operating system. Delta blues did not emerge only from songs about hard times, but from a worldview in which the material and spiritual were not separate. The pact at the crossroads, the body taken by a larger signal, the root sewn into a bag — these are not folk beliefs to be explained away. They are operating instructions for how power moves.

In 1961, Columbia Records released Robert Johnson’s King of the Delta Blues Singers, produced by Frank Driggs, sixteen tracks from his 1936-1937 ARC sessions in San Antonio’s Gunter Hotel and Dallas. That record did more to create British blues than any British record. By the late 1950s, a form derived from American blues emerged in Britain, reaching its height in the 1960s, dominated by electric guitar, with stars including the Rolling Stones, the Animals, the Yardbirds, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Cream, Fleetwood Mac, and Led Zeppelin. Son House, meanwhile, was rediscovered in 1964 by Nick Perls, Dick Waterman, and Phil Spiro in Rochester, New York, working at a train station, retired for years and unaware of the folk blues revival. He played the Newport Folk Festival in 1964. This rediscovery economy — Newport 1964–65 — repackaged the Delta as folk wisdom for a new audience.

In 1977, NASA launched Voyagers One and Two, each carrying a Golden Record containing sounds and images intended to represent humanity to any extraterrestrial intelligence that might recover the spacecraft. Among the selections is Chuck Berry's 'Johnny B. Goode,' a composition built upon a twelve-bar blues progression in B-flat major.
The decision is instructive. Historically, NASA’s committee, led by Carl Sagan, selected Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode to represent humanity’s popular music — a cultural choice, not an engineering one.
Read through this book’s symbolic framework, the twelve-bar form also functions as a robust protocol: its AAB lyric mirrors call and response, and its harmonic rhythm of I-I-I-I-IV-IV-I-I-V-IV-I-V provides predictability for error correction over interstellar distance while permitting variation for individuality.
In information theory terms, it has built-in redundancy and a checksum. We shot twelve bars into the void as a calling card. That’s not just metaphor — that’s operating system as language of contact.
